How to analyze competitor reviews with AI

By the ProLevelMax team · Updated 2026-10-28

Your competitors' reviews tell you what their customers are unhappy about, what they praise, and which promises they fail to keep. Reading them by hand takes hours. With an AI tool such as Claude or ChatGPT and a data source for public reviews, you can pull reviews from several competitors at once and get a clear comparison in a few minutes.

What competitor review analysis gives you

  • The complaints you can win on. If a competitor's unhappy customers keep mentioning billing or slow support, that is a message for your landing page and sales calls.
  • The praise you need to match. What their happy customers mention is what buyers expect from you too.
  • Words customers actually use. Review text is a ready source of phrases for ads, headlines and FAQs.
  • A baseline to watch. Running the same check every month shows whether a competitor is getting better or worse.

Worked example: Pipedrive and HubSpot on Trustpilot

We asked an AI tool for the 35 most recent English Trustpilot reviews of two CRM companies, Pipedrive and HubSpot. The run returned 70 reviews published between 31 July and 27 October 2026 and cost $0.099 ($0.015 run fee + 70 × $0.0012).

We tagged each low-rated review by theme. A review can have more than one theme, and the counts are rough.

What a marketer could take from this sample

  • For both companies, the loudest complaints are about the relationship, not the product: support, renewals and getting out of a contract. A competitor in this market can lead with clear month-to-month terms and easy cancelling.
  • 21 of Pipedrive's 25 five-star reviews are about a support or onboarding session, often naming the person who helped. Praise in this category is about people, so hands-on onboarding is worth showing.
  • Pipedrive replied to every review in the sample; HubSpot replied to none. Reply rate is easy to track and says something about how a company treats its public reputation.

Read the numbers with care. Trustpilot reviews are self-selected: unhappy customers are more likely to write, and some companies invite reviews after support calls. 35 reviews per company is a snapshot of the last three months, not a market survey. Use it to find themes, then check them against other sources such as G2 or Reddit.

How to do it yourself

  1. Create an account at prolevelmax.com. New users get $2: $1 for verifying your email and $1 for your first data (once per person). No card required.
  2. Connect your AI. Generate your setup message in Get started in the console and send it to your AI, or add https://prolevelmax.com/mcp as an MCP server. Step-by-step setup is in How to give your AI real-time social media data.
  3. List your competitors and where their customers leave reviews: website domains for Trustpilot, app names for the App Store, product pages for Amazon or G2.
  4. Ask in plain words. The AI picks the source, shows you the price, and runs it after you agree.
  5. Ask for the comparison you need, then download the reviews as CSV or Excel if you want to keep them.

Limits

  • Public reviews only. Private feedback, support tickets and anything behind a login are not collected.
  • Ratings and review counts are what the site shows at the moment of the request.
  • The AI's theme counts depend on how you ask. For decisions that matter, ask it to quote the reviews behind each theme and check a few yourself.

FAQ

What is competitor review analysis?

Reading and grouping the public reviews of competing products or companies to find what their customers like, dislike and expect. It is a quick form of voice-of-customer research that does not need access to the competitor's own data.

Which review sites should I use?

The ones your buyers read. For B2B software that is usually G2, Capterra and Trustpilot; for apps, the App Store and Google Play; for local businesses, Google Maps; for physical products, Amazon. Reddit and TikTok comments add opinions that never reach a review site.

How many reviews do I need?

30–50 recent reviews per competitor are usually enough to see the main themes. Use a few hundred if you want to compare periods or count themes more reliably.

Do I need a subscription?

No. You top up a balance and pay per run. The example above cost $0.099.

Can I do this in ChatGPT?

Yes. Any AI tool that supports MCP or Skills can run it, including ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor and Codex.
