How to get full Reddit comment threads, including collapsed replies, into your AI

By the ProLevelMax team · Updated 2026-10-19

Most of the useful material in a Reddit thread sits below the first screen: replies three or four levels down, and branches Reddit collapses behind "more replies". This page explains how ProLevelMax returns whole comment threads, which fields each comment carries, how collapsed branches are expanded, and what it costs per 1,000 comments, so you can judge it against other Reddit scrapers before running a large job.

The three Reddit comment sources

Swipe to see more columns →

SourceWhat it returnsPrice
procli_reddit_b
Post comments
Comment trees of one post, one page per call. The next page is fetched by passing page.after from the previous result.$0.003 per call
procli_reddit_h
Comment replies
Replies under one comment. Use it to expand a collapsed branch: pass the post ID and the more.cursor value from the comment that was collapsed.$0.003 per call
procli_reddit_a
Bulk posts and comments
Many posts and their comments in one run (several subreddits, searches or URLs), with a per-post comment limit (maxComments) and a date filter for comments.$0.0108 per result + $0.06 per run, minimum $0.1394 per run

Per-call sources suit a few dozen threads read in full. The bulk source suits hundreds of posts where a capped number of comments per post is enough.

Collapsed branches are expanded, not left as placeholders

Reddit does not send every reply at once. Long threads come back with "more" stubs where a branch was collapsed. Many scrapers return those stubs as placeholder records with an ID and stop there, so a thread that looks complete can be missing its deepest replies.

With ProLevelMax the stub carries a more.cursor value. Passing it to procli_reddit_h (Comment replies) returns the replies under that branch, and the same applies to further stubs inside them. An AI connected over MCP does this on its own when you ask for "all comments, including collapsed replies"; in your own scripts you loop until no more.cursor is left.

Fields returned for each comment

From a live procli_reddit_b result:

  • id (for example t1_...), so comments can be de-duplicated and joined
  • createdAt (ISO timestamp)
  • authorInfo (username and author details)
  • content.markdown (the comment text)
  • score and isScoreHidden
  • permalink (direct link to the comment)
  • depth (nesting level in the thread)
  • isRemoved, isAdminTakedown, isLocked, isStickied, isInitiallyCollapsed and initiallyCollapsedReason
  • more.cursor on collapsed branches
  • page.commentCount and page.hasNextPage on each page

Removed or deleted comments are returned as Reddit shows them publicly, usually without text, and are flagged so you can filter them.

What 1,000 comments cost

Per-call route: each call costs $0.003. Over our recent calls, the Post comments source returned a median of 10 results per call. At that rate, 1,000 comments take about 100 calls:

100 calls × $0.003 = $0.30 per 1,000 comments

Threads with many collapsed branches need extra Comment replies calls at the same $0.003 each, so budget somewhat above $0.30 for deep threads.

Bulk route: $0.0108 per result plus $0.06 per run. 1,000 results in one run:

1,000 × $0.0108 + $0.06 = $10.86

The bulk route costs more per comment but runs many posts in one job. For reading full threads of a limited set of posts, the per-call route is the cheaper option.

Every run is quoted before it starts and the charge never exceeds the quote. Prices can change; current rates are on the Reddit data page and your AI shows the quote before each run.

How to run it

In an AI connected to ProLevelMax, ask in plain language, for example:

Get all comments, including collapsed replies, for this Reddit post: [post URL].
Return a table with author, time, score, depth, text and permalink, and tell me the cost first.

With the REST API:

  1. POST /v1/run with {"scraper":"procli_reddit_b","input":{"post_id":"t3_<id>","sort_type":"TOP"}}
  2. Repeat with after set to page.after until page.hasNextPage is false.
  3. For every comment that has more.cursor, POST /v1/run with {"scraper":"procli_reddit_h","input":{"post_id":"t3_<id>","cursor":"<more.cursor>"}}, and repeat for stubs inside the returned replies.
  4. De-duplicate by id. Download the run as CSV, Excel or JSON if needed.

Setup: in the console, open Get started, click "Generate setup message" and send it to your AI, or add https://prolevelmax.com/mcp as an app in ChatGPT and sign in. Details are in the docs.

  • Public data only. Private and quarantined communities cannot be read.
  • Reddit's displayed comment count includes removed and deleted comments, so readable comments can be fewer than the count shown.
  • Scores are a snapshot at request time.
  • Up to 5 jobs run at once per account. Results are kept for 30 days.
  • Using Reddit data commercially is subject to Reddit's terms; collecting data does not by itself grant usage rights.

FAQ

Does ProLevelMax return nested Reddit replies?

Yes. Comment pages include nested replies with a depth field, and collapsed branches can be expanded with the Comment replies source using the more.cursor value.

How much does it cost to scrape 1,000 Reddit comments?

About $0.30 on the per-call route at the measured median of 10 comments per call, plus $0.003 for each collapsed branch you expand. The bulk route costs $10.86 for 1,000 results in one run.

Are author, ID, timestamp, score and permalink included?

Yes. Each comment has id, createdAt, authorInfo, score, permalink and depth, plus flags for removed, locked and collapsed comments.

Do I pay for failed runs?

Failed runs are generally not charged. If part of a run completed, only that part is charged, and never more than the quote.
