How to do customer research on Reddit with AI
Reddit is one of the few places where buyers compare products in long, specific threads: what they tried, why they returned it, what they wish existed. That makes it useful for customer research and slow to read by hand. With the threads and full comment trees in front of it, an AI can extract pain points, jobs to be done and competitor mentions, each with a quote and a link you can check. This guide shows how to get there and what it costs.
Why AI can't do it alone
Without a data connection, ChatGPT or Claude can only use what web search returns: a handful of Reddit threads that a search engine has indexed, usually without the full comment tree. Reddit also limits automated access. For research you need many threads, every comment in them, and the scores, dates and links that let you weigh and verify each quote. That has to come from a source that fetches Reddit at the time you ask.
Do-it-yourself options

| Option | How it works | Works well for | What you take on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read and copy by hand | Search Reddit, open threads and paste the useful comments into a document or chat | A few threads, an early hunch | Hours per category; selection depends on what you happened to open; quotes lose their links and scores |
| Reddit's .json pages | Adding .json to a thread URL returns its data, which you can save or script | Small, technical teams | Deep replies come back collapsed and need extra requests; rate limits; scripts to write and maintain |
| Reddit Data API | Register an app with Reddit and call the official API | Developers building their own tool | App registration, rate limits, and a separate agreement with Reddit for commercial use |
| Your own scraper | A script or headless browser collects threads from searches and subreddits | Teams with a developer | Building and hosting it, handling blocks and layout changes |
| Research and export tools | Hosted tools search Reddit and export threads or summaries | Regular research without code | Another subscription or bill, and exports to move into your AI |
All of these can feed an AI if you upload the result. The work is in collecting complete threads consistently, so the analysis is not limited to what was easy to copy.
The connect-a-data-source route
Connect your AI to ProLevelMax once, then describe the research in plain words. The AI searches Reddit, reads subreddit feeds, pulls each thread with its comments, expands deep replies and writes the analysis in the same conversation.
- Create an account at prolevelmax. com. New users receive $1 in sign-up credit after verifying their email (one per person). No card required.
- Connect your AI.

Full steps are in How to give your AI real-time social media data. - Ask in plain words. The AI picks the Reddit sources, tells you the price and runs them after you agree. Runs that can cost more than $0.10 always wait for your confirmation.
- Keep or export the results. Each run can be downloaded as CSV, Excel or JSON, and results are kept for 30 days.
Developers can call the same sources from scripts or an n8n HTTP Request node through the REST API. See the docs.
A research workflow that holds up
- Find the conversations. Search Reddit for the category and the words buyers use ("best standing desk", "standing desk regret"), and list the subreddits where they appear. Check each subreddit's description and member count.
- Pick the threads. Take the posts with the most comments from the last 6 to 12 months, plus top posts in the two or three most relevant subreddits.
- Pull complete threads. Get each post with its comments, then expand the deep replies, where detailed experiences often sit.
- Extract with evidence. Ask for pain points, jobs to be done and competitor mentions, each with a count, a short verbatim quote and a link.
- Separate data from reading. Ask the AI to keep what the threads show apart from its own interpretation, so you can review it.

map where buyers talk
Search Reddit for posts from the last 12 months about choosing or regretting a standing desk.
List the subreddits where these posts appear, with member counts and the number of matching posts in each, and suggest the three most relevant.
pain points and jobs to be done
From r/homeoffice and r/WorkFromHome, take the 25 posts about standing desks with the most comments in the last 12 months. Read every comment, including deep replies.
List the main pain points and the jobs people hire a standing desk to do. For each, give the number of comments, two short quotes and their links.
competitor mentions
In the same threads, find every brand or product people mention.
Make a table with mention count, what people praise, what they complain about and whether they recommend it, with one linked quote per brand.

From these threads: [thread links]
Collect the exact phrases people use to describe the problem before they bought anything. Group similar phrases and show how often each group appears.
Name subreddits when you know them. A search across all of Reddit returns more noise.
What it costs in practice
Most Reddit sources are billed per call: $0.003 per call. One call returns one page of results, and the "Post details" source returns a post with its comments in a single call.
Example: one category study. Run 4 searches, read top posts in 3 subreddits, pull 30 full threads, fetch extra comment pages for the 10 longest and expand 10 deep reply chains.

| Item | Calls | Price | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reddit search | 4 queries × 2 pages = 8 calls | $0.003 per call | $0.024 |
| Subreddit feed (top posts) | 3 subreddits × 2 pages = 6 calls | $0.003 per call | $0.018 |
| Post with comments | 30 threads = 30 calls | $0.003 per call | $0.090 |
| Extra comment pages | 10 long threads × 3 pages = 30 calls | $0.003 per call | $0.090 |
| Comment replies | 10 calls | $0.003 per call | $0.030 |
| Total | 84 calls | $0.252, about $0.25 |
Arithmetic: 84 calls × $0.003 = $0.252. The pricing page estimates about $0.03 to read 100 comments with the page-by-page comment source.
Reddit also has a batch job that collects posts and comments from several subreddits, searches or links in one run. It is billed per result: $0.0108 per result plus $0.06 per run, with a minimum of $0.1394 per run. For example, 500 results cost 500 × $0.0108 + $0.06 = $5.46. It is meant for large pulls in one job; at the size of the example above, the per-call sources cost less.
Your AI shows the price before every run, and the charge never exceeds the quote. You can set a daily or monthly spending limit for each API key or connected app in the Dashboard. These figures cover data only; your AI plan is separate.
To track a category over time, ask your AI to create a weekly schedule. Schedules run at a set Beijing time, each run is capped at its run limit, and results land in your run history.
Limits
- Public data only. Private accounts, messages and anything behind a login are not collected. Private and quarantined subreddits can't be read.
- Removed and deleted posts or comments show only what Reddit still shows publicly, usually nothing.
- Platform rules. Follow Reddit's terms and each subreddit's rules, especially if you plan to contact users or post in the communities you research.
- Privacy. Usernames are public, but research outputs should focus on themes and quotes, not on profiling individuals. Follow the privacy rules that apply to you, such as GDPR.
- Sampling bias. Reddit users skew toward certain ages, countries and levels of product interest, and people with problems post more often than satisfied buyers. Upvotes reflect a community's taste, not the market. Use Reddit findings as hypotheses to test with other sources.
- Scores and comment counts are the public numbers at the moment of the request.

FAQ
Is Reddit a good source for customer research?
It is good for finding problems, vocabulary and alternatives that buyers consider, because threads are long and specific. It is not a representative sample, so use it to form hypotheses and check them with surveys, reviews or sales data.
Can the AI read every comment in a long thread?
Yes. The AI reads the post with its comments, fetches further comment pages and expands deep replies. For very long threads, set a page limit to control cost.
Do I need a Reddit account or Reddit API access?
No. You only need a ProLevelMax account. Only public posts and comments are collected.
How do I check that the AI's findings are real?
Ask for a short verbatim quote and a link for every finding, and for counts per theme. Open a sample of the links before you share the results.
